Advertising

Imagine being at the movies, a form of escape from day to day life, and after the previews ads are run for area businessess. There is no fast forwarding through this or even time to leave the room before the show starts. I find this offense. I do not want to be sold to everywhere I go.

A local grocery store chain now have their cashiers pitch an “item of the week” that is displayed proudly right in front of the customer. A shopper can easily impulse buy the item, but not this shopper. Out of obstinance and resentment I won’t purchase the item.

This all led me to watch for advertisements and see how invasive they have become in our lives.

First is what I call litter along the roadside. Many of us have used this method for advertising a yard sale or selling a used car. This would be the free method. Simply take a cardboard square, write on it, and nail it to a telephone pole on a busy street near your house. No problems here for me. It is middle America trying to bring in income.

The real litter are professional signs that are on a wire frame and can simply be stuck in the ground. Within a four block area of my home I saw four yard sale signs, two homes for sale, one by an established real estate company, and one from a help you sell type of agency. Certainly a low cost type of advertising that is effective.

Two signs on a telephone pole were so small that I could not read them and hence not an issue for me except as littler.

One sign, stuck in the ground, was for a house auction which was the first I saw of that type. Really, I was not surprise. Our economy is not in the shape that our illustrious leader in Washington would want us to believe.

An impressive display was a hard wood display for an auto detailing company. This had two sides, stood by itself, and was chained to a telephone pole.

Finally the last one was a professional looking ad for a nail care center.

Once I opened my eyes and saw what was there, it surprised me. How long has this been going on? Did I just not really see it before? Are Americans so immune they don’t really notice? I think the later may be true in my case.

Annoying also are advertisements that pop up when I am browing the web. Everyone is annoyed with those. They are not solicited. They are unwanted and thank goodness for pop-up control programs.

Certain web advertising is okay with me. Many of us do it all the time as free advertising, providing a link in our signature line to either web content, Associate Content articles, businesses or services that we offer.

Most Americans advertise in one way or another in their lifetime.

My objection to is advertising that is forced upon me and advertising that litters our road sides.…

Green Your Home on a Budget

Each room of your home represents your personal style. From the mocha café walls in the great room to the brilliant red abstract painting you found at a local art show, your tastes, style and personality can be found throughout your home. And wouldn’t it be great if each room conveyed your personal style and was eco-friendly too?

Making eco-friendly, green choices can be challenging, But when you take the time to learn about how products are made, what ingredients they use and where they come from you may find a greater appreciation for the items you interact with everyday. And fortunately, making more eco-friendly choices doesn’t have to cost a fortune or take a lot of time. Read on to discover some simple, affordable ways to add green style to throughout your home.

Kitchen

Admit it. You have a drawer full of items saved for special occasions, many of which never see the light of day. And chances are hidden deep inside the drawer are those linen napkins you received as a wedding or house warming gift. Never used, but ready for the day they will be. Well, today is the day.

Using cloth napkins instead of disposable paper napkins not only adds style to the table everyday, it also saves valuable resources and money. Unlike throwaways, cloth napkins can last several years which means you can save hundreds of dollars over the life of the napkins. And since cloth napkins are so compact in size, you can easily throw them in with your weekly load of towels without adding extra loads to your laundry. Or if you prefer a more casual look, consider turning old t-shirts into napkins. Fun and whimsical, soft and absorbent, once your favorite t-shirt becomes too worn out to wear, turn it into napkins by cutting into 6 x 6 squares and stitching the edge. The t-shirt napkins are simple to make, and easy to care for since no ironing is required.

Before giving old pots and pans the old heave-ho, consider turning them into a decorative accessory. Teflon pans, recently cited by the EPA as a possible cancer risk when used to cook at high temperatures, can now transform to become a holder for dish towels, plants or even cook books. Remove the handles from smaller pots and pans and they transform into a cabinet organizer for clips, twist ties or packets of seasonings.

Bathroom

Possibly, the least favorite room to clean, the bathroom is surprisingly simple to green. Simple things like losing your plug in air freshener which can actually emit toxins into the air and replacing it with essential oils can create the air quality of the room. Simply place a drop of essential oil of cinnamon, lavender, peppermint, or eucalyptus on a cool light bulb. When the lights are turned on a toxic-free, fresh scent filters through the air. Another trick to keeping your bathroom smelling fresh is to dab a cotton ball with your favorite essential oils and hide inside a basket of towels or discreetly on a shelf. The scent will fill the air and can be refreshed as often as needed.

Bedroom

The perfect place to start greening your bedroom is with bedding. Although cotton is a natural fiber, it typically requires pesticides and fertilizers to grow. The Sustainable Cotton Project estimates that 12 pounds of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers are applied to every acre of cotton in the United States. Organic cotton is grown without the harsh and toxic chemicals that often end up in the waterways and pollute the earth for years to come making it a more eco-friendly choice.

Another luxurious, yet green option is bedding made from bamboo which is naturally environmentally-friendly, antibacterial and soft. Bamboo fabrics are made from bamboo fiber yarns which are naturally silk-like and easy to dye, making it possible to find the perfect color to match the color scheme of your room.

Consider transforming your room into one inspired by the tropical colors of Caribbean or the warm colors of the American Southwest with clay and milk paints. Made naturally from clay, clay paints and plasters are available in a range of natural earth tones and textures. Another …

Business: Pester Power in Marketing, Now Schools

Nag, nag, nag they go on and on about the things they have seen on TV, items someone wants to sell. These are our little ones, those who hold on to our hearts with their very voices and this is what advertisers have been using for years to increase their sales. Funny thing, these voices same have the means to push for other things, better things for us all. One such young voice is Martha Payne a nine (9) year old who is using her voice to speak out against politics. She is following the same as other students who once videotaped their teachers in class doing nothing; only Martha is doing it to the lunches. The school system has already seen what happened when these teachers were held responsible, now the politicians do not want to be the next ones held responsible.

Pester power is the ability for children to want to something so bad they continue to pester adults to get it. Advertisers have been using this in one form or another since the beginning, but the laws are carefully crafted around such to prevent seen abuses. Still the fact children have the means to direct and control some family spending has given them influence in many factors. Schools are looking for more income so they are allowing marketing to students in exchange for funding. The influence children have over the family spending also has influence outside the family. Those attempting to corrupt the political processes are also aware of such and do not want such influence out of their hands.

The sound of little voices is influenced by what is taught to them and how they react to such teachings. Just as we have gained more information about the recycling and global warming, we have also seen these same voices speaking out as well. But they did not stop there, they carrying cameras, taking photos of what real life is like for them. This was done on the streets, about gangs, racial thoughts, and even in the classrooms, all to make some change happen. But those who are attempting to control their lives also are taking actions to prevent such freedoms.

Political forces do not want what they can not control taking actions, describing what things are really like in a way that others will see and understand is action. The power these little ones have has been used to push political agendas for many years, from birth control, abortions, and even save sex marriages. But when these same speak about the matters they understand and yet this is outside the established political control, fear is generated. It is from this fear actions were taken against Martha Payne. Efforts taken were meant to serve the adults’ interest, the concerns of the educational system them being developed once more for the adults not the students.

Our current educational system has many flaws, exploited and abused by the organizations developed to protect the adults involved, few concerns left for the students regards. These adults influence the political operations, wages, conditions and education our children receive. Yet as the children are attempting to take actions for their regards, cameras have been instrumental in gaining the evidence which clearly shows how they are being treated. We may choose not to believe everything the children are saying, but it is hard to refute the photographic and movie evidence they have been making. This is the evidence Martha has been able to gain, with a camera she has pointed a finger at the school lunches.

Education and nutrition are going hand-in-hand in politics these days, all the way to the White House under control of the First Lady. With such emphasizing on school lunches is it a wonder our children are taking notice of what happens as well? They have to eat this stuff, if it is not suitable, not being fed, or even not being eaten this is important. The public has a right to hear from our children what they see and have to go through every day. But political forces have for years wanted to reduce and even eliminate this point of view, for the fear of them being seen …

Use of Eco Friendly Goods

Man is aware of the conservation of environment. Conserving our environment is our moral responsibility. We must conserve our biosphere as it is, if not better for our descendants. The future depends on the decision which we take, as individuals, as a society and as a nation. First of all, we have to decide to stop the destruction of earth and its scenic beauty. To achieve this we have to encourage the use of eco friendly goods.

As people understand the necessity to protect the environment the demand for eco friendly goods is increasing. Earth friendly goods are the environment friendly products; they help us to live the green life. They are very useful in our day to day routine. The more the eco friendly goods are used the better. They help us to prevent the increasing pollution and lead us to better living.

Many of the eco friendly products are made from hemp. It is one of the only sustainable or biodegradable products available. It is ultimate eco fiber. Eco friendly goods are made up of many other natural resources like bamboo, organic cotton, soy, flax, wool and many other earth friendly resources. They are biodegradable and do not cause harm to the earth and its environment.

Majority of earth friendly products are created by small business owners, including family businesses. These businesses strive for perfection in the creation of their one of a kind item as their success depends on satisfaction of the consumers. Day by day people are becoming aware of its essentiality to use the eco friendly goods so the small companies are striving to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly products.

By purchasing products from the earth friendly network we help to support small businesses, families and most essentially the future of mother earth. We should understand that after all saving the planet begins from us. We should take care of every small thing we can. Slowly it will lead to development of the society and environment. There are eco friendly products which meet all our healthy living needs.

For instance the sustainable wood furniture, complete eco friendly bedroom sets are available and even singularly available. Such products must be used and our bedrooms will become eco-bedrooms. Natural latex mattresses are great alternative to the traditional chemical laden bed or popular temurpedic. For individuals with allergies or chemical sensitivities, such eco friendly goods are really useful.

There are many other eco friendly goods like hempseed which is a nutritious food source. Gel cap supplements are substitute to oil. The other widely popular eco friendly products are hemcofee, hemp flour, hemp seed, snacks, various personal care products, eco bags, clothing and much more. It is a never ending list.

Use of eco friendly products saves energy, helps the environment and it does not harm the eco system once flushed down the plughole. Eco friendly products do not contain pesticides, herbicides, solvents or degreasers, SLAs, parabens, phthalates or chlorine bleaches. They do not contain anything which is harmful to the environment. Use of eco friendly products is necessary, important and every helpful for the overall development.…

Green Life After Death

Many of us do our best to live an environmentally green lifestyle, making changes in our routines that include everything from adjusting the thermostat to putting bricks in our toilet tanks. But what about continuing that green commitment into our deaths and even beyond? The preparation of our bodies and subsequent rituals upon our deaths can be environmentally destructive. From carcinogenic embalming fluids to hardwood caskets, following traditional funeral and burial protocols take their toll on the environmental health of those we leave behind. We do have options, however, that allow us to leave this world in the same manner we occupied it – eternally green.

Embalming – One of the major components in traditional embalming fluid is formaldehyde, which is a proven carcinogen. A study released in 2009 by the National Cancer Institute reported a link between exposure to formaldehyde and a higher incidence of death from myeloid leukemia. There are eco-friendly options for embalming, however, including one substance that is formulated from nontoxic and biodegradable essential oils. In addition, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), no US state actually requires embalming. So unless a body is being transported in between states or on an airplane, it may not even be necessary.

Burial Vessels – The UCS reports that, ” Caskets, grave liners, and vaults in U.S. cemeteries use more than 30 million board feet of hardwood, 100,000 tons of steel, and 1.6 million tons of concrete each year.” Green alternatives include sustainable soft woods, or even biodegradable cardboard. You will need to shop around for an accommodating cemetery, however, as many have their own requirements, including some that are mandated by state law.

Cremation – The process used in traditional cremation produces significant amounts of carbon dioxide, and with about one-third of Americans choosing this option, that’s a lot of greenhouse gas. A more environmentally-friendly option is called resomation. This process “uses water, heat, pressure, and potassium hydroxide to decompose bodies; the bones that remain are processed into a fine powder.”

The Eternal Gift of Green – If cremation is your decision, you may want to take the ultimate green step and consider having your cremated remains mixed with concrete and fashioned into part of a memorial reef to provide valuable habitat for hundreds of aquatic species of both flora and fauna. Family members can even be involved in the casting of the reef, and choose their loved one’s final resting place from a list of reefs in progress. See Eternal Reefs for more details.

Five of the World’s Most Unusual, Eco-Friendly Home Furnishings

With all this talk about taking care of the Earth, and learning to efficiently use the world’s resources, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at some inventions that are little known to the rest of the world. There are plenty of us who religiously and meticulously separate our waste materials. But it seems that there are organizations who are taking the “green” movement a little bit farther than the average consumer. In my quest for life’s most interesting conversation pieces, I lucked up on a several different mind-blowing home decorating options (most of which are made of recycleable materials). Mind you, each and every one of these are fully-functional, and in most cases, some of the most beautiful pieces of home art you’ll ever find…

  1. A FIREPLACE IN YOUR TABLE – Those not fortunate enough to have a cozy spot in the house for gathering around a toasty fire are finally in luck. Schulte Design is marketing a line of furniture called “Fire Furniture”, with one of the more popular pieces being a small coffee table which has a fireplace integrated into the center of its structure. In case you’re worried about pollutants, do not be. The fire is created with a liquid that is emission and smoke free.
  2. BOOKSHELF…OR COFFIN? – The Shelves for Life, which made their debut at the [Re]Design 06 exhibition in London, are perhaps the most functional bookshelves ever invented. After you’re finished using the shelves to hold your most precious literary items, you can use them to hold your most recently deceased. Yes, the contemporary, multi-slat shelves can be dismantled and re-assembled into a fully functioning coffin.
  3. THE KITCHEN CHAIR– I know what you’re thinking. There isn’t any thing strange about a chair being in the kitchen. But what about a chair that actually doubles as a kitchen? Vestal Design has developed a home décor solution for those with extremely limited space. The DoubleSpace Kitchenette is essentially a chair which can be flipped over (via an internal swivel mechanism) and used as a fully functioning stove.

The “kitchenette” contains a countertop and two stove burners. It was also designed with a safety feature which will not allow the stove to be operable when the unit is used as a chair. Furthermore, the device is mobile, and can be rolled around at your leisure. Under the assumption that one will never cook and sit at the same time, this unit was developed to conserve both space and energy.

  4. DINING ROOM IN A BOX– This isn’t a reference to a bucket of chicken, or any variation of “boxable” fast food. The MealBox, created by Igland Design is actually a complete dining room set which fits neatly into a cube measuring almost a 1 ½ feet high.

The furniture itself consists of several jigsaw puzzle-like slats which fit snugly together to form a low coffee table or mini-dining table. The six “chairs” are simply stackable seats which closely resemble foot stools covered in “tush-sensitive” Neoprene rubber seating. This dining room can be taken literally anywhere.

  5. AN IV FOR YOUR HOUSEPLANTS – Green thumb? What’s that? Everyone who has attempted to grow houseplants and failed understands that these lovely greenies need water, sunlight, and lots of happy conversation. Sometimes, we forget to supply the first ingredient.

But if you happen to have Vitamin Living‘s I.V. Plant Pot, then you shall fear no more the imminent death of your beloved household plants. This contraption is a real I.V. which continually provides your plant with its necessary nutrients. When the clear I.V. bag goes a bit flat, you’ll know that it’s time to fill up your plant’s water supply once more.

As I combed the internet and browsed various sites, I was amazed at exactly how many different kinds of companies there are which are solely dedicated to providing innovative solutions to space and energy conservation. By taking a closer look at how we use our square footage and energy, it’s possible to discover brand new ways of conserving the earth’s resources.…

Beliefs of Methodists

Methodism is a Christian movement which makes up 70 million of the some 2.2 billion Christians in the World. The Methodist movement was started in the mid 18th century mainly by the works of John Wesley. Many Christian denominations have the same core beliefs but are very different in other ways. Methodists like any other Christians follow the readings of the New and Old testament of the Bible. They believe in an all knowing loving, God. They believe that after death in the afterlife there is a Heaven and Hell and your actions on earth determine whether you join God in Heaven or Satan in Hell. They believe that Satan resides in hell and tries to do ban on Earth.

Methodists believe in free will. Which means they believe that people make their own decisions and have, “free will,” in their lives, they do not believe that God makes their decisions or has a great plan for them. Another one of Methodists core beliefs is one shared by most Christian denominations and that is they believe in the trinity, and that means that they believe that God is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They believe that God the Son and God the Father have the same nature and being. They believe they are all three ever loving and omnipresent.

Next is their views on Jesus Christ. They believe that he came into the world through the virgin birth of Mary. They believe that he was crucified and three days later resurrected. Which means they hold Easter as a holy holiday. They also believe that he was the Son of God and at the same time God himself in another form.

Methodists like other Christians believe in spiritual salvation. Spiritual salvation is the belief that god saves people from biological death and spiritual death by giving them eternal life in Heaven. Methodists however unlike other Christian denominations, believe that the only way for you to make it to Heaven and get eternal salvation is by Accepting Jesus Christ into your life. They believe good acts alone cannot get you into Heaven but that you must worship, love, and accept Christ into your life while living on Earth. They show their denotation to Jesus Christ by getting baptized and accepting Christ into their life. They try and do good deeds in Jesus’ example however when their good deeds go wrong due to sin they ask him for forgiveness for their sin. This is not to be confused with the practice in Catholicism where they admit their sins to the priest.

Methodists, unlike Catholic denominations, do not worship saints or hold them in any high regard, they seem them merely as people and not saints. They believe Mary gave birth to Jesus and was a very important lady but not that she was a Saint and someone you need to worship and look highly upon.

Way to What?

Yesterday morning as I was reading a comment left by a friend on an article that I had written awhile back, I was overwhelmed by sadness. This friend does not believe in Jesus or in salvation or in the Creator God. The ending of my article said, “When I step from this life, I will step into eternity and into the presence of Jesus.”

My friend’s comment was, “Hey, when it’s over, it’s over! LOL”

Sadness. I didn’t see any humor in her comment because I believe when this life is over eternal life is just beginning. I have had these conversations with unbelievers before and I have even had conversations with God on which words to use. I am a firm believer that we should be salt and light – but I also believe that being too salty or too bright can be a turn off rather than enlightenment.

I tweeted a simple sentence recently, “one sun, one moon, one heaven, one earth, one exit, only One entrance. Do U know Jesus? He is the Way.”

I received a private email response that said, “Way to what?”

My initial thought was to just write back, “Into Heaven.” But what does that say to someone who doesn’t believe? It doesn’t say very much. I waited, I prayed, I remained still waiting upon Him to answer me.

On an unrelated matter, my husband is using his unique gift of cooking as his ministry this weekend. He is the Head Chef for the Kairos prison ministry. My gift is prayer, so I signed on to be a prayer warrior at 6 am this morning to pray for the team that will be ministering to the female prisoners. As I was doing the devotionals for my husband and the team, I came across the answer that I was looking for to give to the question, “Way to what?”

The Way to the Creator God.

Look around you, God’s fingerprints are everywhere. Psalm 19 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God…Day after day they pour forth speech.” The Creator God provided a Way to return to Him through His Son, Jesus. You can dwell in His presence for all eternity or you can dwell in hell. You have a choice.

How to Live a Green Life: Four Books to Help You Get Started

As the call goes out for industries, businesses and the all important consumer to become more eco-conscious and live green lives you may find yourself wondering, “What Can I Do?”. In fact it’s a very good question I am surprised to hear more and more often from those interested in going green. If you did not have the advantage of say, growing up in a huge scouting family where the organization’s appreciation for nature and conservation practices trickled into everyday family life then you might need some help getting started.

Just changing a few ways we do things each year really does make a difference. Some of my friends start small, making a couple changes that do not fit into their everyday lives, and when they cannot directly see the results they stop. Other friends of mine have noticed big changes right away and gone completely fanatical annoying even me, a self proclaimed flower lover and occasional tree hugger. So, rather than starting your new green life by adopting a panda (which is admirable if this is your passion) or by installing a new roof entirely made from solar panels try changing fours to six ways you live and I guarantee you will notice the results while your new habits become second nature.

To help you decide what changes are right for you and your lifestyle check out some new great reads, all available from amazon, that offer more than the usual recycle/reuse story. A couple books offer new innovative ways to go green and clean up your act while others are full of inspiring stories to make this planet of ours cleaner, safer and better off.

Worldchanging: A User’s Guide To The 21st Century

At first glance I thought the only types that would enjoy this book were the fanatical friends of mine installing solar panels that I mentioned earlier. After thoroughly reading through the many sections of this book I have found that there are simple as well as huge ideas for helping you live a green life. In fact using this book you could design an entire house from the ground up using eco friendly materials in eco friendly ways. Along tith the more ambitious projects are simple everyday things we can do in our lives to help curb our impact on the planet.

365 Ways To Change The World: How to Make a Difference One Day at a Time

I like this book for the variety it has giving the reader tasks to do every day of the year allowing you to directly notice change or inspire you to create your own changes. Not every day calls for a new project or a change in the goods and services we use. There are days you simply meditate and others asking you to talk to others about a global crisis.

The Rough Guide to Shopping With a Conscience

The information presented in this book will change the way you as a consumer shop forever. At times thinking back on the way we have shopped in the past may lead to feelings of guilt, do not let it! Put that energy and thought into positive change that the author helps you achieve.

The Business of Changing the World

The stories offered in this read are not so much ways to change how you life but stories of how others have changed the lives of others or the world around them. This book describes big businesses at their best, detailing the ideas and actions taken by company leaders and employees. Some of the stories are truly inspirational and give you a new appreciation for the companies and the fundraising efforts they support.…
